Here Florida is about to execute a 74 year old man with dementia.
I moved on to this wing, 5 Right bottom back in February 2026. I wasn’t on this wing more than a month before I started seeing William (Bill) Thompson struggling with dementia. I’ve known him for decades, and lived around him on the same wing in 2023-24 and again in 2025. I went down to his cell in March or April, found out who his legal counsel was and had my wife contact them about his state of mind. To my knowledge they did absolutely nothing! No doctor was sent in to evaluate and test him.
His mind was getting worse as the weeks went on. It was so bad that I was cleaning his cell for him, getting him new bed rolls because the blood on his sheet’s and clothing from the open wounds he had from scratching and medical issues he wasn’t being properly treated for, I was helping him down to the shower, getting his meals during day room and helping him make his weekly phone call, and I was watching him deteriorate.
One day in June or July, we had just gotten canteen. Not 30 minutes later I was walking by his cell, I looked in on him sitting there, I asked how he was doing because he was looking confused, and as were talking —
He said, “Do you think we will get canteen this afternoon?”
I said, “Bill we just got canteen 30 minutes ago.”
He said, ” I didn’t get canteen!”
I said, “Bill I watched you walk by with your canteen bag.”
He looked confused and dumbfounded.
Another time he tried to argue with me about using the phone. He called his friend, who I believe is from Italy, once a week. I told him, he had called her the day before, but he couldn’t remember and went to arguing with me. I said go call her and she will tell you. After he talked to her, I said “see?” I was constantly reminding him of things he’s forgetting, or find things in his cell that he was losing. He would lose his soap dish, glasses, tablet etc in his cell and I would go down there and find it.
He got a disciplinary report for lying to a staff about his hearing aids, which he couldn’t find in his cell. But staff went in there and found them. I told classification about his dementia, and my wife emailed the assistant Warden, informing her about how we’ve contacted his attorneys over his dementia to get that disciplinary report thrown out. They still kept him over there longer than they should have.
While on disciplinary confinement, he lost his laundry bag one day in his cell. An officer came to me, knowing I was looking after him, and the officer was telling me about it. I told the officer to make him open both of his lockers, and its probably laying right there in plan sight. I told the officer about the soap dish incidences and canteen issue. The officer was saying how he was getting frustrated with him, and he knows its not Bill’s fault, but was wondering how to deal with him and the dementia. I explained it. The officer came by later and said it was in his cell.
One time our laundry officer is looking for a pillow. I had to go down and find his pillow that he couldn’t find. And the laundry officer was thinking he didn’t have a pillow, I go down to search for it, and as soon as I open the locker there it is in plain view. And Bill didn’t know how it got there.
I was constantly talking to staff about this. Several officers acknowledged that they seen the memory problems, and commented he’s going to windup being placed in Whisky Dorm, which is the medical unit. Which is exactly where he was yesterday Friday September 11, 2026, when Governor DeSantis signed his death warrant.
I bring all this up to show you that these attorneys have done nothing for him, when staff and inmates have seen how he has mentally deteriorated over the months. The Christian volunteers who come in and minister to him, well they’ve witnessed it, and would comment on it to me. I would tell them what I’ve been experiencing with him, and what all I’m trying to do for him. But it all falls back, on the piss-poor representation of the attorneys who represent him. Bill’s attorneys are at fault for not taking immediate action six months ago, to have him tested and evaluated and file the appropriate motions to ensure his warrant wasn’t signed.
Like I’ve said many times: Welcome to the wonderful world of the United States Judaical System and the sham they call due process!
In all reality, Bill would have been better off with no attorney, than the lack of representation that these attorneys have just failed to provide for Bill over the last six months. Yes Bill was not only Whisky Dorm due to his dementia, but he’s got all types of medical problems. Swollen testicles, swollen legs, and just recently was suffering from blood clots in his lungs and phenomena. He’s mentally and physically dying, and the state of Florida is hell-bent on spending tens of thousands of dollars to carry out this legalized murder of this 74-year-old man who’s been on death row for 50 years! And he’s going to have to be constantly reminded, that he’s on death watch, with only days left to live.
Anyone who supports and celebrates this disgusting act, is just pure evil! Because if you can’t see there’s something wrong with this, then there’s something seriously wrong with you. God have mercy on this sick society we live in!
Regretfully Submitted,
Ronald Wayne Clark Jr.
