Reporting on/from Prisons

CFRC’s Prison Radio

“The program features news, interviews, writing, and documentaries about prisoners and prison issues. Content is produced by CFRC [Community Radio Fund of Canada] volunteers and by other campus and community radio broadcasters.” — website: https://cfrcprisonradio.wordpress.com/

Empowerment Avenue

Empowerment Avenue’s mission is to normalize the inclusion of incarcerated writers and artists in mainstream venues by bridging the gap between them and harnessing this creative proximity as a path to de-carceration and public safety. — website: https://www.empowermentave.org/

Journal of Prisoners on Prison

“The Journal of Prisoners on Prisons (JPP) is a prisoner written, academically oriented and peer reviewed, non-profit journal, based on the tradition of the penal press. It brings the knowledge produced by prison writers together with academic arguments to enlighten public discourse about the current state of carceral institutions.” — website: http://www.jpp.org/

Prison Journalism Project

PJP is creating a national network of prison journalists. “Information about the prison system is limited, and policy makers and voters are shaping the lives of incarcerated people without their input. We’re bringing transparency to the world of mass incarceration from the inside and training incarcerated writers to be journalists, so they can participate in the dialogue about criminal legal reform.” — website: https://prisonjournalismproject.org/

Among its projects, PJP launched “PJP J-School,” a correspondence-based journalism course tailored for prison writers. The first cohort of 15 students around the country began in 2021.

Prison Radio

Prison Radio is an “independent multimedia production studio producing content for radio, television, and films for 30 years and distributing throughout the world. We stream high-quality our audio material to media outlets and the general public in order to add the voices of people most impacted by the prison industrial complex.” — website: https://www.prisonradio.org/

Scalawag Magazine

Scalawag’s mission is wider than reporting on/from prison, but often focuses on abolition and prison-related topics. In addition, see their The Press in Prison below. “Through journalism and storytelling, Scalawag works in solidarity with oppressed communities in the South to disrupt and shift the narratives that keep power and wealth in the hands of the few. Collectively, we pursue a more liberated South.” — website: https://scalawagmagazine.org/

The Press in Prison is a Scalawag Media guidebook for journalists prepared in Illuminating the need for incarcerated voices in journalism, this guide is intended to increase newsroom competency and capacity to work with writers on the inside, integrating reporting from prison into regular reporting cycles. Print copies can be purchased through your local independent bookstore, directly from Haymarket Books, or via Bookshop. Addition material, including video, is available at Scalawag.

Vera Institute

Vera Institute includes reports from inside writers. I cannot find a category, tag, or page with all these writers in one place; however, searching on “JPay” brings up inside authors plus few articles by outside writers on that system. Some authors include Walter Ball, Martez Johnson, and David Sell. Vera Institute “News and Stories” — https://www.vera.org/news-and-stories/
